Christmas Stockings Bring Joy

Christmas… As the song says, “it’s the most wonderful time of the year,” but is it really? It may be for those children making cookies for Santa, or nervously pretending to go to sleep and anxiously waiting to open the gifts under the tree the next morning. However,  this year has truly changed things for all of us. Especially, as it relates to adults with disabilities. Regardless of the holiday, you celebrate, this time of year is always a time for good food, family gatherings, and great memories. Christmas is a special time of year, but this year things look very different.

Merry Christmas

All of us at On My Own wish you health, happiness and success in the upcoming year!

Christmas Chaos

This year has been one of great change and unprecedented times, in many ways. It has definitely impacted many children and adults alike. In particular, those with disabilities. Many of these adults and children are empowered by structured routines, social interactions, and daily schedules. The past few months have been especially difficult for them, with long periods of isolation and quarantine. And, all other “changes” brought on by this global pandemic. Additionally, it has limited their social interactions and altered their daily routines. That being said, the holidays can also be a time of added stress and difficulty for them. Possibly, facing sensory overload or becoming overwhelmed with the “happenings of the holidays. All the chaos of the season can be overpowering.

Even though this year came with a few hurdles, we continue to share in the holiday spirit. A hallmark of On My Own is creating opportunities for life meaning. We facilitate this by serving others to reinforce one’s sense of purpose! We will continue our mission to bring joy, smiles, and warm many hearts. During times like these is when On My Own really wants to be present, no pun intended, for those adults with disabilities that need us. Even though they continue facing many challenges in their daily lives, we are committed to empowering them in every way possible.

A special thank you to Reyna’s House for making a difference in the lives of children with autism, and many other disabilities. We had the honor of sharing some Christmas cheer with them this year. On My Own is thankful and delighted to have provided Christmas stockings for over 20 boys this year. We hope they are enjoying their gifts! Feeling blessed for celebrating this journey of service with another amazing nonprofit!|

On My Own loves to give to others. Providing food, gifts, joy, and essential training for independence is what we do every day. We live in a society where unfortunately individuals with disabilities are often being ignored. Thank you, Reyna’s House, for sharing our parallel mission, and for everything you do. We are better together.
