Thanks to the generosity and vision of the Miami Marlins, August 29th was a Sunday Funday unlike any other. The 2 to 1 win against the Cincinnati Reds was icing on the cake to an already perfect day filled with excitement and camaraderie as the On My Own non-profit organization celebrated and luxuriated in this timeless American tradition . . . baseball!
The Marlins really ‘walked the walk’ by acting on their commitment to help create a world that is supportive, compassionate, and loving – a world where individuals of all abilities support and encourage one another. On My Own clients gave the Marlins Mermaids dancers a run for their money as we moved to the groove that is unique to the Miami sound and spirit. Some of the patrons clandestinely passed on their healthy packed lunches to enjoy the traditional hot dogs and pretzels to get the complete ballpark experience. Some of us were dressed for humid 90-degree weather, not realizing that the stadium is a modern metropolis of indoor comfort, shielding us from the elements with its revolutionary three panel retractable roof and breathtaking views of the downtown Miami skyline.
After watching Billy, the Marlin in full form with his good-natured shenanigans, we thought it couldn’t get any better until that magical moment when the real player depicted by our promotional bobble heads made a real heads-up play to get the lead runner in the bottom of the 4th inning. We all agreed that Miguel Rojas was much more handsome in person than his Big Cleat Bobble!
We love you Miami Marlins for supporting On My Own adults with disabilities and helping our clients attain independent living skills and having positive engagement with their community and these all-American heroes!
